It was a brilliant day with the Geckos on Saturday, with the weather holding out and even a few rays of sunshine later in the afternoon. We got loads of climbing done and finished off the day with an abseil. Thanks to everyone who came along. Check out all the pictures on the Geckos Flickr account.

Outdoor Climbing 18th June

It was mixed weather on our most recent outdoor day as the pictures show! We managed to get around 45 mins of climbing done before the heavens opened and we took shelter. Then there was a break for another 30 minutes or so before it rained again. After the second downpour we decided to go back to The Rope Race and finish off the day indoors. It was an absolute scorcher on Wednesday for the Holiday club outdoor climbing day. We got loads of climbing done with plenty of bouldering and an abseil to finish off the day. Outdoor Climbing at Windgather 16th April

The Geckos are going outdoors on Saturday 16th April 2011 from 10a.m - 3p.m.

It will cost £25 per person, anyone under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

We're going to Wingather Rocks and there is a maximum number of 8, so get booking to avoid dissapointment.

Over the next few months there are some exciting events coming up. The first is the Halloween fancy dress night, it is on the 29th October. Come down in your best/worst fancy dress outfit and play some games as well as the usual climbing. These run in the normal Friday night sessions 5-7 and 7-9
On the 19th of November it is Children In Need night. we will be running some fundraising activities, if you have any ideas for activities let us know in the coming weeks.
On the 10th of December we will running our fantastic Christmas Party. More information will be given closer to the date.

It was another excellent day at Windgather on Friday, starting the day with some bouldering we then continued onto the main crag after lunch. Why not join us this school half term, we have a new programme of events including climbng, archery, outdoor climbing, nature walk and crafts. During the school Holidays, we are climbing outdoors on Friday 29th May and June 5th at Windgather Rocks. The cost of the day will be £30 and will include all equipment needed. We will be meeting at the centre at 10 a.m and plan to be back before 4 p.m. You will need to bring plenty of warm clothes and a waterproof, plus a packed lunch. Phone the centre to book your place. (if cold and wet, visit the main website for normal activities indoors)

This year we are hoping that you are going to raise loads more money for this brilliant charity. On Friday 13th March we will holding a fun competition for anyone who wants to join in, there will be 3 routes and 3 boulder problems and prizes for the winners. The competition will start at 5pm until 9pm, there will be judges on every route so come when you can and have a go.
There will also a prize for the best decorated wellies!! so don you boots, get the sticky back plastic out and let your imagination go wild!! (you don't have to climb in them but it would be fun)

On Saturday the 11th of October the Geckos went outdoors to Hobsons Moor Quarry, where they had a fantastic day and luckily managed to get all of their climbs done just before the rain came. Rock Academy Training Club

From Wednesday the 10th of September, Rope Race will be holding a weekly training session for dedicated Geckos who wish to improve their climbing ability.

The sessions will focus on the different aspects of climbing and will involve coaching to meet specific individual needs. The aim of these sessions is to prepare our Geckos for future competitions.

Those wishing to participate should speak speak to a member of staff.

We look forward to hearing from our future pros!

Junior climbing series round 2

A big well done to the Geckos who took part in round 2 of the junior climbing series on Saturday. The Rope Race contingent had loads of support not only from each other, but from all the family and friends who turned up to cheer them on.

Well done to Ellissa who came 1st in the 8-10 category with 480 points.

Congrats also to Shelley who came 2nd in the 11-13 category with 457 points.

Good job Ellen, for coming 5th in the 11-13 category, getting 403 points.

Well done Cornelia who is 11th overall, getting 308 points in the 11-13 category on Saturday.

Good job Jen who was 5th with 14-16 category 397 points.

Youth Climbing Series Round 1

Well done to all our competitors on Saturday. A great day was had by all and our Geckos supported each other brilliantly throughout the day. Plus we looked like the most professional team there in our new Rope Race hoodies!

In the 8-10 girls group, Ellissa Bryant came first with 480 points. Nice work Ellissa.

In the 11-13 girls group, Shelley Pickles came 3rd with 455 points, Ellen Downs came 6th with 394 points and Cornelia Mcneff came 9th with 371 points. Congratulations girls.

In the 14-16 girls group, Jennifer Wood came 5th with 362 points closley followed by Catherine Burgess in 6th with 356 points. Good on you both.

Finally in the 14-16 boys group, well done to our only male competitor Liam Woolleson, who came 7th with 339 points.

I'm already looking forward to round 2.

Outdoor climbing

We are starting our programme of outdoor climbing days and

new for this year an after school group.

Why not join us on Monday 31st March (Easter hols) for a full days climbing in the Peak. We will be leaving Rope Race at 10am and will be back at the centre for 4pm, the cost for the full day is £30.00 this includes all the gear, so all you need to do is bring is bring loads of warm clothes, lots of food and hot drinks. Parents are welcome to join us, as places are limited, ring the centre and book your place.

Hi Geckos,

Good on ya' for all who turned up to the Rochdale competition. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did.

The format for the competition was a series of 3 boulder problems and 3 routes (BRYCS Style).

Well done to Ellissa Bryant who can first in the 8-10 category, Shelley Pickles who was second in the 10-12 category, and Jen and Catherine who just missed out on medals for the older category. Hard luck to Liam who injured his finger on his second problem (you're a walking disaster Liam)! Hope you're fixed soon.

Climbing Starts 10.00am, registration from 9.00am, pre-register where possible to ensure your place, this can be done over the phone by credit card. Entries will be accepted on the day. Entry cost £12.00 which includes a 'T' Shirt plus memento for all competitors.
The competition will follow the new BMC YCS rules; 3 boulder problems and 3 routes for each age category both male and female. Top roped routes in the lower two age catergories and Lead climbing for the oldest catergory.
Age groups as BMC YCS: Those born in 2000,1999 and 1998 (Age 7/8 and no older than 10) Those born in 1997,1996 and 1995 (Age 10/11 and no older than 13) Those born in 1994,1993 and 1992 (Age 13/14 and no older than 16)

On Sunday 20th January we will be hosting the first of our 2008 under 16`s climbing competition.There will routes for each age group; Registration will take place between 12.00 - 12.30pm and cost £6.00 per person. All competitors must bring their parent or guardian to complete the consent form.
Age categories 7 – 10 years, 11 – 13 years & 14 – 16 years.

Training and strength workshop - Friday 11th January
Balance workshop - Friday 25th January
Trust workshop - Friday 8th February
Footwork workshop - Friday 22nd February
Confidence workshop - Friday 7th March

The workshop will last approx 1 hour, this leaves plenty of time for individual climbing time, the sessions will start at 6pm. If you come to the 5pm - 7pm Geckos session then this will be the last hour of your session. If you come at 6pm then you can climb until 8pm. It will cost the same as your normal Geckos session.

The workshops will be run by Paul and will be very active training sessions. Every 2 weeks there will be a new workshop, however each workshop is ongoing and you can use what you've learnt when youre not training with Paul.

On the weeks in between workshop training sessions, Paul will be setting a designated route for our Climbing Team to attempt and work out together ask at reception for details of the problem.

On Saturday 24th November Rope Race hosted a junior climbing competition. The competition was a great success and all the staff at Rope Race would like to say huge big well done to all the competitors who climbed excellently and made the whole day brilliant fun!

There were 3 groups; 7 - 9 year olds, 10 - 12 year olds and 13 - 15 year olds.

GECKOS XMAS PARTY!

This christmas Geckos are going WILD! The theme of this years party is "The Jungle" so dress to impress in your best fancy-dress outfit, whether you're a lion or a cockatoo get yourself down to Rope Race for some amazing festive fun!

We'll be having loads of climbing games with a jungle twist and a large scale adventure hunt, we'll also be enjoying a christmas buffet and there'll be prizes for the best dressed and for the winning teams, and even a sneaky present from santa.

Children in Need

This Friday 16th November we are having a fun `Fancy Dress` climbing event!! in aid of Children in Need. We will donate £1.00 to the charity for everyone who dresses up, there will be prizes for the best fancy dress and the best dressed pair, so let your imagination go wild!!

CLIMBING COMPETION - ROCK ACADEMY

Saturday 27th October 2007: Held at Rochdale, the bouldering competition that was organised for our junior section to get some practice of competition climbing was a great success. Run along the same lines as the BRYCS, the competition gave the climbers a great experience and practice session to add to their list of escapades!!

A great day had by all and a super experience.

THINK PINK @ ROPE RACE

Thursday 25th October 2007: In aid of Breast Cancer UK we held a 'Pink' evening at Rope Race, inviting all our climbers to come along in support of this worthy cause wearing something pink. If climbers entered wearing something pink £1 of their entry was donated to charity. OUr climbers were also invited to take part in a number of 'pink' challenges we set for them, including bouldering problems, climbs and traverses. We requested voluntary contributions to take part and this alone raised over £60!

The evening was great success, with loads of climbers taking a challenge sheet and an excellent representation from our junior section.

Congratulations go to Ellissa Bryant, David Kirk and Catherine Burgess who won the competition and walked away with new chalk bags as well as 'pink' prize!!

Well done and many thanks go to all those who attended, took part and gave generously.

Towards the end of the summer we had a number of very sucessful outdoor days for our junior climbers. Our juniors come along to Windgather for the day and as well as getting to grips with climbing outside on real rock they can also have a go at abseiling as well!!

We'll be running some more outdoor days in the future, for our juniors so wathc this space and the website for more information!!!

Competition Training

ROCK ACADEMY TRAINING: Saturday 13th October was the first event in what will become a regular fixture for Rope Race. A number of climbers attending a 2 hour bouldering training session with a local bouldering expert and teacher, in preparation for a competition that will be held at Rochdale climbing wall this coming Saturday 27th October 2007.
The feedback from the 'trainees' was that the workshop proved extremely sucessful in helping them prepare for the coming competition.

Outdoor Climbing Days

We are now into the the swing of regular outdoor days for the Geckos. Both August and September's outdoor days have gone down well and the weather held out for us on both 4th August and 1st September. A range of climbs all over the crag and even an abseil gave the climbers plenty to go at for the day. One or two on both days managed a go at one of the hardest routes on the cliff, Portfolio, an HVS, or Hard Very Severe, graded climb which is a significant achievement.

With our outdoor days now becoming a regular event the next day will be the first Saturday in October (6th October) and we'll be going to Windgather, near Kettleshulme.

Kayaking club

New for the winter is our kayaking club, the first session will run on Saturday 8th September between 1.00pm - 3.00pm and is for anyone over the age of 8 years.
We will focus on a mixture of fun and enjoyment as well as improving everyone`s paddling skills and work towards gaining BCU Kayak Star Award. All kayaking equipment will be provided. you only need to bring is a complete change of clothes and old trainers just in case!!
Places are strictly limited so if you want to join us contact the centre and book your place.

Outdoor climbing - 1st September

Congratulations!!!

We'd like to say a big well done to all the Geckos who are competing in the BRYCS at the minute.

BRYCS stands for British Regional Youth Climbing Series, and climbers from all over the country are competing in their regions for a place at the grand final in Ratho, Edinburgh. Only the top three from each region get through to the final so the competition is pretty tough.

Rope Race has 6 Geckos competing at BRYCS in different age categories, they have completed 2 rounds out of the 3 that they have to attend at different climbing centres across the North West. So congratulations to -

Shelley Pickles (Girls category age 10 - 12) Currently ranked 5th

Elissa Bryant has written this about her day in Rochdale -

My Climbing at Rochdale BRYCS Round 2

24th March 2007

We left home at 8.20am and arrived at Climb Rochdale, looked around and registered.

First we started stretches in a big hall and then we went out into our groups and the 13 - 15 girls and boys went to the bouldering but I started with top rope routes.

The first route was purple and like a warm up it was easy. The second route was a bit harder and it yellow, nearly everyone in my group did it. The third one was the hardest and that was blue, I went to the top.

After this we had a break for lunch.

Then we went upstairs to the bouldering room and the first route everyone did. The second one was a tiny bit harder but good. The third one I nearly gave my mum a heart attack because I nearly fell off the wall but I didnt and I got to the top.

I was in joint 1st position with a girl called Lucy and we had to do an age 10 - 12 top-rope climb off. I nearly went to the top but Lucy didnt get as far so I came in first place!

It was a really fun day and it was great to win.

Good luck to everyone competing in the third and final North West round on April 28th.

Geckos Xmas Party!

We all had a brilliant time, despite the war between the Elves and the Reindeer a truce was called in time for some party food!

Both teams did brilliantly in the games and congratulations to both teams who drew in the end.

After the party food we all split in to age groups and competed for the prestigious title of Christmas Climbing Champion. Everybody did excellently but the winners were;

Children in Need Pirate Night

Ooh argh me hearties!!! Sponsored pirate night was a huge success, we raised lots of money for Children in Need and the sponsorships are still coming in!!!! Everyone made such an amazing effort with their costumes. The Rope Race Team want to thank you all for such a fun night, we hope that you all enjoyed yourselves.

Blindfolded climbing was just one of the many challenges that we set for the Geckos and it went down a storm!!

Geckos Get Outside!

Saturday November 25th

We know it's cold but now is the ideal time to get out in the Peaks and get climbing on some real Gritstone.

Whether you're new to the outdoors and want to give it a try or a Platinum Gecko looking to tick off some stages, this day is for everyone.

If you've already started lead climbing we're going to teach you about the equipment outdoors and how to use it, you can put your platinum skills to the test and start helping us to anchor the belayer, and set up releasable abseils.

We'll be meeting at Rope Race at 10am, gathering our kit and having a briefing, then we'll travel out together in parents cars. We will be due back to Rope Race at 4pm at the end of a hard days climb.

The price of the day is £30 and is dependant on enough parent helpers offering transport.

Essential Kit Advice :

ITS GOING TO BE COLD! Bring lots of layers, a hat, gloves and a very warm coat! Waterproofs are essential items as well. If you've got any of your own climbing kit bring that along with you. Make sure you bring a large lunch, including a flask of hot drink. And don't forget your smile!

Congratulations! To all those Geckos who have completed or who are near to completing their Gold award! If thats you - read on....

More and more of you are becoming brilliant climbers, and we want to take you to the next level.
If you haven't tried leading yet - we'll get you started, if you want to continue to improve, we're here to help.
We have organised a series of Geckos Elite nights to help you to start/complete your Platinum Award. We will have instructors on hand to put you through the stages. And as an added incentive we will also be setting up an abseil so that you can either learn the basics or put your existing skills to the test.

The Vital Info -

The first Platinum night will be on Friday November 10th
There will be 2 sessions: 5pm - 7pm and 7pm - 9pm
It will cost the same as your normal Geckos session
